Occupation: Former leader and safecracker of high-stakes thieving gang The Invisibles.

Character Biography:

History: Maurice came from a working class London family, but always wanted to provide something better for his own family when he grew to have one. He read a lot and learned about many things, though he was scrappy and tough as well. At an early age, he discovered he had a gift for breaking into things--more than that, he found locks fascinating and was drawn to the puzzle and the art of picking them. But it was not until his twenties that he truly entered the world of crime. He eventually became the leader of a gang of criminals known as The Invisibles, a high-stakes thieving operation that stole from banks, museums, and the like. He married a model, Barbara, and fathered a daughter, Grace, from whom both parents agreed to keep his true occupation a secret. After one member of the gang, Vernon, died in a fire during a job gone wrong, Maurice and the remaining member decided to retire from thieving and move to Spain to escape the warrants out for their arrest (although they were never definitively identified as The Invisibles). Years later, Maurice suffered a heart attack, and at his wife's urging, moved back to England to the bosom of the NHS, along with his partner-in-crime and best friend Sid Woolsey. There, they fell into a series of misadventures in which they found themselves once more attempting to ply the skills of their trade, though they had become rather rusty at it after all those years. Vernon's son, Hedley Huthwaite joined them on these jobs as the third member of the re-formed Invisibles. During this time Maurice's daughter discovered his secret, but eventually forgave him for lying to her for so many years.

Personality in seven words or less: Conflicted, vibrant, loyal, pessimistic, principled, loving, hot-tempered.

How Others Perceive Your Character: Maurice seems like a pretty normal bloke: he supposedly worked as a bank manager in London, and his daughter thinks he has spent his life being unadventurous and straight-and-narrow. However, this is an act, and those who know him see a vital, passionate man, perhaps a bit pessimistic, who feels a responsibility for everybody he loves, and who loves deeply. But he is also prone to lose his temper, to be violent (though not in an out of control, dangerous way), and to be a bad person to cross (while being a good person to be on the good side of). His wife knows him best, and knows him to be a tender, caring but deep-feeling man, sometimes confused and sometimes conflicted about his own feelings, but in the end always coming through. She knows he chafes against the life he pretends to live because it bores him and doesn't allow him to do the things he most loves, but she has watched him put aside his true calling for the sake of her and their family time and time again.
